Examples in China, 夯土 “Kang-tou”

These images give a small impression of the scope of rammed earth 夯土 “Kang-tou” use in China, from the ruined walls of a 13th century city near Turfan in the Taklamakan desert to modern house building in the south west the Chinese scope of work is impressive and heartening. In a recent survey some 50% of buildings in 90 Chinese cities had an element of rammed earth, and of course many others have other earth building 土樓 “toutou” typologies, including Shanghai and Hong Kong.

The Great Wall of China is also built of rammed earth, long reputed to be the only man made structure visible from space.
